Plywood Grades & Applications

Plywood is an engineered wood panel. It is produced by peeling thin layers of wood called veneers from a log, drying the veneer and then gluing the veneers at alternate angles to each other. As wood is weak in one direction but strong in the other, the resultant sheet is usually stronger than the original piece of timber. Plywood has many options, but these can be broadly grouped into the following: Structural, Decorative, and Non Structural. Structural plywood should be used when the sheet has a load being exerted upon it. An example of this could be flooring and formply. Decorative plywood is where the face of the sheet is used as a feature. Areas may include walls, ceilings, furniture and cupboard doors. Non Structural ply is where the plywood is not subject to load. Suitable applications may include lightweight shelving, pallets/crates, templates and wall lining where appearance is not crucial.

Veneer quality

There are 5 veneer qualities specified for plywood in the Australian Standard. The veneer quality relates to appearance only, and not to structural properties.

  • Veneer Quality A: is a high appearance grade veneer suitable for clear finishing where surface decorative appearance is a primary consideration.
  • Veneer Quality S: is an appearance grade veneer that permits natural characteristics such as knots as a decorative feature. The type and frequency and type of characteristics permitted is part of a written specification acceptable to both manufacturer and consumer.
  • Veneer Quality B: is an appearance grade suitable for high quality paint finishing.
  • Veneer Quality C: is a non-appearance grade with a solid surface (all open defects are filled) and is designed specifically for applications requiring a solid non-decorative surface such as flooring which will be overlaid with a decorative flooring surface.
  • Veneer Quality D: is a non-appearance grade with open imperfections up to 75mm wide, and is designed for applications such as structural plywood bracing.

The plywood veneer quality is specified by two letters; the first being the face veneer quality and the second the back veneer quality. For example,

AA for marine plywood,

AD for wall cladding where only the front face is visible,

CD for structural plywood flooring

DD for structural bracing

Structural Plywood

Structural plywood is an engineered wood panel that is designed and manufactured to a known set of attributes. It is very important to use Structural plywood when load is being exerted on the plywood. Structural plywood has to be branded with information relevant to the standard - if it’s not branded, it’s probably not structural.

Plywood Flooring T & G

Plywood Flooring is the smart choice for discerning builders and specifiers. Available in a wide range of thickness options, plywood flooring will provide a solution to most flooring applications

Technical Specification

Glue Bond Type: Type 'A' Bond Phenol Formaldehyde
Standard: AS/NZS 2269
Formaldehyde Emissions: E0
Stress Grades: F11 and F1
Thickness: 12, 15, 17, 19, 21, 25mm
Sheet Size: 2400/2700 x 1200
Face Grades: CD
Core Gaps: Some
Treatment Options: ACQ, LOSP & CCA
Resource: Plantation Grown Pine Timber

Treatment Options

Plywood has the advantage of being treated to protect the panels from either insect or fungal attack.

Application

Treatment options include Core Veneer Treatment, LOSP envelope and CCA envelope. Most products are treated to either H2 (termite) or H3 (termite and rot). Other options are H4 and H5 which are required when the panels come into contact with the ground. Applications where treatments are specified include Cladding and Flooring in areas that are prone to extreme mositure or termite attack. The veneer option is highly recommended as cut edges to the panels do not require additional processing.

Formply

Formply is a type of plywood generally used in the construction industry as a means of supporting concrete prior to it curing and becoming a floor. The plywood surface is overlaid on both sides with phenolic paper to act as a barrier between the curing concrete and the timber surface of the plywood.

Technical Specification

Glue Bond Type: Type 'A' Bond Phenol Formaldehyde
Standard: AS/NZS 2269
Formaldehyde Emissions: E0
Stress Grades: F14 and F17
Thickness: 12, 17, 19 and 25mm
Sheet Size: 1800 x 1200 and 2400 x 1200
Core Gaps: Puttied and painted
Resource: Plantation Pine core combined with Hardwood veneers

Application

As a formwork deck in the constuction of multi storey buildings. It is important that only plywood manufactured in accordance with AS/NZS 2269 be used. Beware of unbranded imports as serious injury or death may result if the plywood fails.

HARDFORM - F14 Formply

Hardform F14 Formply is manufactured from 100% hardwood resource and is compliant to AS6669

Technical Specification

Glue Bond Type: Type 'A' Bond Phenol Formaldehyde

Width: 1200mm
Length: 1800/2400mm

Application

Hardform will achieve a significant number of reuses and is a highly durable product suitable for general formwork applications.

Brace Ply

Brace ply is an important but seldom seen component in house construction.

Technical Specification

Glue Bond Type: Type 'A' Bond Phenol Formaldehyde
Standard: Manufactured in accordance with AS/NZS2269
Formaldehyde Emissions: Very Low - E0.0 - 0.3ppm
Stress Grades: F22
Thickness: 4mm
Width: 900/1200mm
Length: 2440/2745/3050mm

Application

Brace ply is an important element in house construction as it 'braces' the timber frame and plays a crucial role by providing racking resistance against external forces such as strong wind

Cladding

Plywood cladding has long been a favourite of architects and designers and now it is finally being recognised by builders and home owners alike. Sourced from renewable plantation resource, plywood cladding is lightweight and can be finished with stains, penetrating oils and acyclic paint.

Technical Specification

Glue Bond Type: Type 'A' Bond Phenol Formaldehyde

Application

Primarily as the external walls of houses, beach or alpine resorts and commercial projects. Plywood cladding is lightweight, has excellent thermal properties and has low embodied energy which makes it an excellent choice when environmental impact is important.

Exterior Plywood

Exterior plywood manufactured to AS/NZS 2271 utilises high quality Hoop Pine face veneers. With face grades such as AC and BB, many clients select this product when they require a superior face for painting or clear finishing. Exterior plywood is suitable for fully or semi-exposed applications provided it is finished correctly. It is not recommended to leave plywood un-finished in external situations.
